Description

The canvas was probably tucked away in a portfolio before being attached to its stretcher

It depicts a shepherd and shepherdess tending to their animals by the River Medway in Kent

Its smoke seems to echo the flames that rise from the nearby burning buildings

Maurice Ambroise Ehlinger was highly regarded during his lifetime and exhibited in several French museums and galleries

19th-Century French School Barbizon School Landscape With Fisherman square The canvas was probably tuckedA wonderfully atmospheric French school landscape depicting a tree lined pond and a seated fisherman. It has a lost in time quality and appears to be a barn find. Its signed L Devedeux, which refers to the great French landscape painter Louis Devedeux (1820 1874). Its unlikely that he painted this so perhaps the artist was a follower. Its certainly from the same period. The painting is housed within a chippy gilded frame with swept foliate decoration.
