John Atkinson Grimshaw, Baiting the Lines, Whitby, 1884 Frame:gold was as well known asJohn Atkinson Grimshaws innovation was to apply the artistic tradition of moonlit scenes of nature to an urban and industrial context. A self taught painter who was born in Leeds and worked the docks of Hull, Liverpool and Whitby, the artist documented the rain and mist, the puddles and smoky fog of Victorian industrial England with great poetry. For a time in the 1880s he rented a London studio near the American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
