来年はうさぎ年。

鞍を載せ、面繋や尻繋を表した装飾をめぐらせた、力強い姿の馬形埴輪です。大きく張り出した首、筒状に立つ四肢、背に立ち上がる鞍や飾りの表現に、古墳時代の造形感覚がよく現れています。

使い重ねるほどに木肌は育ち、色合いは落ち着きを深めていきます。時間とともに移ろう姿も、この道具の楽しみのひとつです。

アンダーソン土器には幾つかの形状がありますが、本品はその中でも極めて数の少ない皮袋形土器です。この形は新羅から、日本へ伝わっており、須恵器の皮袋形土器が、わずかに現存しています。
