A control deck which reliably draws three cards a turn and runs 45 Lands can probably skip ramp altogether in favor of more interaction
Bident of Thassas main effect suits decks with evasive creatures and/or lots of cheap creatures that you don't mind sending forth as lemmings, but its activated ability can also pave the way for bigger threats
I dont find Thundering Spineback particularly tempting, however
