Life gain gets no respect, because when you invest mana and cards in life gain it has the nasty habit of not making a difference, especially when you're trying to play a burn-heavy game, which either involves trying to burn out an opponent or all opposing creatures

The Tome is right to operate the other way (given that its completely random what you get), but it just rubs me the wrong way

In fact, it remains banned in Commander, and most other Magic formats, to this day

Overall, while I'm not sold on its power level right now, I am eager to see how players might find creative ways to make this card broken
